What is IPFS, and why does it matter?
IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a distributed storage network. Once your file is encrypted in your browser, it's pinned across IPFS nodes rather than sitting on a single server that can go down — resilient, distributed storage. WeTransfer keeps your files on their own servers, where they arrive in the clear.
Who can see my files?
Only the people you share the link with — and you can require a password on top. Files are encrypted in your browser before they leave your device, so what we handle is ciphertext, and you decide exactly when a link dies: by time (e.g. 7 days) or by download count (e.g. after 3 downloads).
Can I send a file without creating an account?
Yes. Drop a file on the homepage and you get an encrypted link right away — no account, no email. Guest sends go up to 1 GB and last 24 hours; a free account doubles that to 2 GB per file and adds 10 GB of storage and 7-day links.
What happens when a link expires?
The file is deleted and the link goes permanently dark. Not archived, not moved — gone. You control when: by time (e.g. 7 days) or by download count (e.g. after 3 downloads). WeTransfer gives you far less control over this.
